The Sanskrit word Pranayama means Prana + Ayam. ‘Prana’ means life and ‘Ayam’ means long. Pranayama in general meaning is healing and long life.

The type of breathing techniques in pranayama is divided into three stages: Inhalation through the nose (Purak), retention (Kumbak), and exhalation (Rechak).
